When I was a child there were two rules: 1. Go play outside. 2. Be home for dinner.
No longer. Everything is scheduled. Skating, swimming, gymnastics, soccer, brownies - everything. PLAYDATES......yes PLAYDATES are slotted into timeslots, marked in daytimers, zapped into palm pilots.... The idea of opening the door, sending the kids tumbling outside with feigned stern warnings to be back on time.....sadly a thing of the past. Have we advanced? Are we learning more about ourselves? Will we forget how to play?
This is a frequent rant of mine that I was mulling over in my head for my next date with a soapbox ...and then I remembered this photo of my daughter and her cousins, lakeside at Little Loon, Saskatchewan. It's a part of the country that even the ubiquitous cell phone has just barely encroached upon.....and I felt better :)
There - they just played.
